Women's Basketball: Cougars use stifling defense to roll past Bison

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College women's basketball team suffered their first home loss of the season against Chatham University Wednesday evening. The Cougars defense was too much for the Bison to handle as they defeated the Green and White, 88-59.

GAME FLOW

  • Chatham opened the first quarter on an 11-3 run over the first four minutes of play, with the lone basket of the Bison's coming from Lindsey Garrison. Garrison broke the scoring drought for the Bison at the 5:59 mark with a layup, cutting the deficit to 11-5. Bella Skobel scored back-to-back baskets bringing the Bison within two. With 3:17 to go in the first, Josie Stone knotted the game at 13-13. Bethany held their only lead of the game with 2:02 to go after Taylor Dusenberry hit a jumper. However, the lead didn't last long as the Cougars came down and hit a three. The Cougars led 21-18 after one quarter of play.
  • Chatham was in full control in the second quarter, outscoring Bethany, 21-4. Kate Botti scored the Bison's lone baskets in the quarter. The Bison had seven turnovers that turned into points for the Cougars.
  • Chatham led 42-22 at the half.
  • In the second half, the Cougars outscored the Bison, 46-37. The Bison attempted to comeback but their second quarter deficit was too much to overcome.

IN THE BOX SCORE

  • Lindsey Garrison led the Bison with 16 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the arc.
  • Makenzee Mason added 12 points with three rebounds, three assists and four steals. 10 of her 12 points came in the fourth quarter.
  • Kate Botti led the Bison on the boards with six rebounds. She chipped in eight points.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars shot 60.7 percent from the field (37-61). The Bison were held to 36.7 percent (18-49).
  • The Bison had 23 turnovers. The Cougars had 14 steals that turned into 33 points.
  • Chatham scored 41 fast break points and outscored the Bison 54-18 in the paint.
  • Bethany went 17-for-19 from the free throw line.
