Women's Basketball: Strong fourth quarter lifts Bison past Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter surge to hold on to defeat Saint Vincent College, 67-66.

GAME FLOW/HIGHLIGHTS

  • Before the game started, the Bison were handed a technical foul and trailed 1-0 before the tip.
  • Saint Vincent opened up the game taking a 10-2 lead. Bethany chipped away and cut the deficit to three to end the first quarter. Sophie Morey hit a layup with four seconds left to bring the score to 17-14.
  • The Bearcats led heading into the second quarter. However, momentum shifted to the Green and White as the Bison outscored the Bearcats, 20-15 in the second quarter. Alyssa Serensky hit a three to give the Bison a 21-19 lead. After the Bearcats knotted the game at 21-21, Lindsey Garrison gave the Bison the lead back after converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. The Bison held onto the lead for the remainder of the quarter to take a 34-32 lead into the halftime break.
  • It was a low scoring third quarter, with the Bearcats outscoring the Bison, 16-9 and took a 48-43 lead into the fourth stanza.
  • The Bison used a 6-2 run to pull within one, 50-49. Over the next few minutes, the both teams exchanged baskets with the Bearcats holding onto the slim lead. At the 3:47 mark, Alyssa Serensky hit a layup to knot the game at 60-60, but the lead was short lived with the Bearcats regaining the lead. After exchanging the lead in the final two minutes, Ashleigh Wheeler gave Bethany their winning layup at the 1:34 mark of the fourth quarter.

  • Bethany and Saint Vincent were almost even from the field with the Bearcats taking a slim advantage at 45.5% to the Bison's 44.4%.

Bethany returns to the court on Saturday, February 10 when they host Geneva College inside Hummel Field House for a PAC matchup. Prior to the game, the Bison will celebrate their four seniors; Makenzee Mason, Alexis Reed, Alyssa Serensky, and Bella Skobel.
