Bethany College Announces 2020 Hall of Fame Class
Bethany, W.Va. – Bethany College Director of Athletics Steve Thompson unveiled the class of 2020 Hall of Fame Inductees as part of the Virtual Homecoming festivities Saturday afternoon. Six new members will be inducted as a part of the 42nd Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Class.
The 2020 inductees include Chuck Carpeta, class of 1972 (Football and Baseball); Duane Cymmerman, class of 2002 (Football); Scott DeUnger, class of 2002 (Baseball); John Masquelier, class of 1969 (Cross-Country and Track and Field); Larry Yanda, class of 1966 (Football); and the 2002 Softball Team.
The 42nd Athletic Hall of Fame class will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on a tentative date for the weekend of March 19, 2021 with more details to follow.
Chuck Carpeta, class of 1972 (North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina), was a four year letter-winner in football and was a member of the baseball team from (1969-70). Chuck was a captain and led the team in tackles his junior and senior seasons. He earned All-PAC First Team in 1969 and 1970 and was the Bethany Team MVP in 1971.
Duane Cymmerman, class of 2002 (Latrobe, Pa), was member of the football team from 1998-2002. He earned All-PAC First Team twice in his career and was a two-time captain. He was a key member on defense leading the team in tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss in his final season in the Green and White. While in the Bison uniform, Duane finished in the top five for sacks and tackles each season.
Scott DeUnger, class of 2002 (Charleroi, Pennsylvania), was a four year letter-winner in baseball. Scott played a key role during his four years in the Bison uniform, leading the Green and White to two PAC Championships and three straight PAC appearances. He earned All-PAC First Team ('99, '01), All-PAC Honorable Mention ('00), and ECAC All-South Honorable Mention. He set the career homerun record with 18 homeruns, and currently sits second on the all-time career homerun list.
John Masquelier, class of 1969 (Mansfield, Ohio), was a member of the cross-country and track teams at Bethany. John was the first Bethany athlete to win a PAC Individual Cross-Country title when he ran the four mile course at Forest Hill Park in Cleveland, Ohio in 21:58.00. He was a member of the PAC Cross-County Championship team in 1966.
Larry Yanda, class of 1966 (Steubenville, Ohio), was a key member of football team. Larry was the starting tight end on the school's first football PAC Championship team in 1966. He played a vital role in three winning seasons. In 1963, Larry missed the football season due to an injury. He became a member of the baseball team in 1963 where he helped the team finish second in the PAC.
2002 Softball Team, is one of the most successful softball teams in Bethany College history finishing a 32-10. The 2002 Softball Team won their fourth straight PAC Championship. The Bison defeated the National Champions in regionals to advance to the NCAA Division III Softball World Series. Their 32 wins is the second most wins in college history and the 1.57 ERA is one of the best ERA's in Bethany Softball history behind the 2003 Team (1.28). The 2002 Team finished the most successful run in Bethany softball history when they fell to Pacific Lutheran in the losers' bracket of the NCAA DIII World Series.
